NCAA football news: Cameron Newton cleared by NCAA

Whoa. Big move by the NCAA this week. Finally putting an end to its investigation regarding Cameron Newton’s eligibility, which was temporarily removed this week, the league reinstated the Auburn quarterback on the grounds that “it does not have sufficient evidence” to prove that Newton’s father was trying to sell him for $180,000.

As plenty of dumfounded pundits have quickly pointed out ,the decision sets an interesting precedent. The NCAA has basically just told all players that, as long as they turn a blind eye and have no visible connection to any middle men in their recruitment, they won’t be punished. Wow.

NBA news: Joe Johnson out four to six weeks; Cavs probing heat for tampering

Joe Johnson To Miss Time For Atlanta

Four-time All-Star Joe Johnson will be out of the Altanta Hawks’ lineup for the next four to six weeks. He requires surgery to remove a “loose body” from his elbow that is causing “unbearable” discomfort.

As LeBron James prepares for his much-hyped return to Cleveland tonight, it’s appropriate to provide an update on the Cavaliers’ tireless effort to expose the Miami Heat in a tampering scandal. Cavs owner Dan Gilbert is working with lawyers and building a case to submit to David Stern. Reportedly, the files will reveal meetings, phone calls and planning for a LeBron-to-Miami signing that date as far back as 2008.

If the Heat are penalized, they could lose draft picks or see front-office members suspended or fined. Needless to say, this is personal for Gilbert, who was already fined $100,000 when he tore strips off LeBron on the night of The Decision.

MLB news: Red Sox meet with Carl Crawford; Jamie Moyer to come back from Tommy John?

We should expect to hear plenty about big-money teams meeting with the big fish in the MLB free agent pond over the last few weeks. One such example: the Boston Red Sox and Carl Crawford. Reportedly, they’ve already met with the coveted outfielder, who batted .307 with 47 steals, 19 homers, 90 RBI and 110 runs last year.

Apparently, 23 years and 267 wins aren’t enough for Jamie Moyer. Even though he has undergone Tommy John surgery and will miss all of 2011, he plans to attempt a comeback in 2012 at age 49.

NFL news: James Harrison believes NFL is targeting him for hard hits

With his fines now up to $125,000 for dangerous hits,  Steelers linebacker James Harrison believes the NFL is specifically targeting him and paying him more attention than it does other players. He continues to appeal every fine he gets and insists that he will not change his tackling style, even though coach Mike Tomlin suggested he should.

Harrison is getting plenty of support from teammates. Hines Ward claimed the NFL is only toughening its player safety rules to push the 18-game schedule agenda.

“The league doesn’t care about us anyway,” Ward said. They don’t care about the safety of the game. If the league was so concerned about safety, why are you adding two more games on? You talk about you don’t want players to drink…and all you see is beer commercials. You don’t want us to gamble, but then there are [NFL-endorsed lottery scratch-off games].”
